Don’t drive full size U-Hauls into decorative gates, kids. (Happened near where I live).

Oh yeah, and this was in February:

Gate is supposed to be all dressy and such:

When clearance is posted for an archway, the measurement is taken from the lowest “corners” of the arch, right? I would hope so...

Probably. The Montreat Gate has never, to my knowledge, actually posted a height limit. Maybe they thought it was obviously not very high.

Is it an historic gate?

So is it just as simple as, Driver gets the bill to pay to rebuild? Or does it go through some insurance or something?

Trufax: old-school mid-capacity schoolbuses with a rounded roof - think an old Bluebird - could fit through the gate if aimed exactly right. A friend of my dad used to drive one through the gate regularly and claimed to have never gone beyond clipped mirrors.

The bashing-things-into-the-gate has been going on longer than I’ve been alive. Many years ago when my dad was in construction, he was working in that town in a set of foundations when he heard a resounding *BOOM*. My dad: “What was that?” Smartass in other foundation: “It was the rapture - and you’re still here!”

Yes - but like the ship of Theseus it has been rebuilt many times. Mostly because of dumbasses doing exactly the above.

How stupid are some people. How do you not know how big your vehicle is?

Well, this one was U-Haul-covers-everything-no-questions insurance, I think. Regardless, there are limits on negligence, so it’s probably U-Haul’s insurance paying, then going after the Dumb Guy.

The best part can be deduced from the pictures I supplied: the truck was on the way *out*. So, they remembered to go around the gate the first time - going in - and then forgot on the way out. With a truck full of their move. :X

I just noticed the “no trucks” sign. But..... but.... How can someone be that dumb?

I see people in Civics and Fits and things slowing down to under 15 to go through because the openings are a little narrow and the gate looks scary. That’s a reaction I can sympathize with, if not endorse. I’M IN A TRUCK YOLO is a completely different thing.

Me thinks they can barely drive a car, and U-Haul doesn’t issue IQ tests when they rent out their “as big as the dumb American laws will allow without needing special training” trucks.

I used to work summers at the place that serves U-Haul to this immediate area - I’m good friends with my old boss, but I haven’t yet asked him what the guy or gal was like. I’m positive he had to yard the truck until Asheville sent it for repairs, and nearly certain he had to rent it in the first place.

There wasn’t even the slightest chance a human with at least a somewhat functioning brain thought that truck was going to fit through there. Like even babies can figure stuff like this out.

Kinja'd!!!

The driver was even too stupid to be a baby?

Come on they could rent bigger. They just need to start renting class A RVs with an (easily ignored) reminder not to load more 1000lbs so you stay under the weight limit.

You see. The sign said ‘No Trucks’ and that there is a ‘UHaul’ so therefore... I’m sure that is exactly what went through the idiot drivers head...

Drive a car thru the same gate twice a day, five days a week, then some on weekends, for 20-odd years, and one day switch to a box truck and try not to follow the same habits.

It’s not “stupid”, so much as inattentive and conditioned by routine.

11'8" is a “requires inattention” thing. Extreme inattention. Any actual attempts to take a U-Haul through the Montreat Gate, otoh, is “requires total moron”.

Quite right, perfectly sensible. It’s like a business sign that says “deliveries at back”. It has nothing to do with anything like that being a small opening and WHAT THE HELL, MAN.

I will admit to, as an adult, trying to figure out which shapes *can* mismatch. The perfect design would, in theory, not allow any mismatches, but lots of those do.

NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m gonna be there in three weeks! HOW COULD SOMEONE SO STUPID DRIVE A UHAUL THROUGH THE BELOVED MONTREAT GATE?!?!?!?!?!?! So much for that wondrous welcome to vacation of driving through the gate with the windows down getting that fresh mountain air all up in the car. :’( This is depressing....

Also, you’re one of the very few people I’ve ever met that knows about Montreat! That’s awesome! Do you live there or something?

I’m in Black Mountain, and connections to Montreat go back a long way. My grandmother’s old 1912 house on West Virginia Terrace is still in my mom’s family. I actually drove my Land Rover in the parade on the 4th. Look me up when you roll through - I promise I’m only mostly crazy.

My experience with shit like that happening is that it might never be fixed, what with the modern cost of masonry.

Oh, this is getting fixed. I saw a number thrown out for repair within days of it happening, and this particular gate has been hit and damaged many times. This is just one of the worst in many years. The town has the money for it even if insurance doesn’t cover it all.

Also, the local cost of masonry isn’t too terrible. The inflated local construction cost here is gravel and concrete, but there’s a lot of stonelaying expertise at reasonable rates.

That’s awesome! Nice to meet an Oppo from my favorite place, lol! And my connections to Montreat go back a long way as well. My family has been going there for vacation every summer since my mom was a kid. Montreat is my happy place. I remember seeing the video of the parade posted on Facebook. I’ll have to go back and watch and check out the LR. And I’ll definitely hit you up if we have some free time. Chances are the kids are gonna keep me pretty busy though. My daughter (who’s 3) has already announced she’s going to climb Lookout with me this year...

I was driving the blue one - my cousin was driving a green one, which I guided him to restore. Even if you just want to have coffee or something - there’s Dynamite Roasting Co. and The Dripolator in town, so possibilities...

There was a truck that got hung up in a bridge tollgate near me a couple weeks back. Drove straight into one of the car-sized gates which are right next to the taller ones expressly for trucks, busses and the like.
